For many seniors diagnosed with a condition that impairs memory or judgement, and for their family members, understanding the diagnostic terms used by health care professionals can be challenging.
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe symptoms which result from diseases to the brain. These symptoms include impairments to memory, speech and perception. Other dementia symptoms are difficulty concentrating and learning new information, disorientation to time and place, and personality or mood changes. To be diagnosed with dementia, the impairments must interfere with the person’s ability to perform routine daily tasks. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of dementia. Other rarer brain diseases that result in dementia symptoms are called related disorders.
At Alzheimer Groupe (A.G.I.) Inc, our doors are open to families affected by dementia, both Alzheimer-type and the related disorders.
